When it comes to Valentines Day, I’m somewhere in the lukewarm middle. I’m not one of those anti-Valentines extremists who dress in black and curse the affectionate traditions. But I’m also not one who pines to clutch a new teddy bear with ‘Be Mine’ embroidered on its stomach while stuffing my face with a large box of chocolates. In my opinion, it’s a nice excuse to do something out of the ordinary, whether you’ve got a special someone or a gaggle of girlfriends. You can head just about anywhere and get a Valentines Day special meal, so I’ll clue you in on some non-restaurant events that might catch your fancy!
Laugh Lover’s Ball at Moore Theater
Self-proclaimed “An uproarious alternative to the traditional ho hum show on Valentines Day”, Laugh Lover’s Ball showcases four professional comedians doing their best 20-90 minute skits that will definitely have you laughing out loud. Everyone penned to appear in this one-night only special, while probably not a household name, has at least been on tv, thus slightly validating their comedic chops. If you’re a non-romantic kind of Valentine celebrator, this might be the night out for you!
Moulin Rouge at Central Cinema
It should stand as no secret that I LOVE Central Cinema. There’s just something about sitting in a cozy theater, ordering greasy food and beer, and throwing inanimate objects at a screen that’s playing a movie I’ve seen a thousand times that is just absolutely delightful. This Valentines Day they’re hosting Moulin Rouge at 6:30 and 9:30 for your viewing pleasure. You can sing, you can cry, you can sob your sorrows in a pitcher…what more can you want? “Believe in truth, beauty, and freedom, and above all things, love.” *Sigh*
Wine and Chocolate Tasting at Volunteer Park Conservatory
Ah. Wine and chocolate. Simple and classic. Head here for an early evening treat, then home to watch something romantic. Love Actually, anyone? From 5-7 you can swing by the Conservatory building and sample some perfectly paired Wildridge wines with Theo chocolates for only 10$. It’s recommended that tickets be bought in advance as only a few are reserved for selling at the door.
Valentines Day Underworld Tour
Not your average Bill Speidel experience. This Valentines-themed tour carries you through the underground streets of Seattle, unveiling its history of love, lust, and corruption. The tour ends at Doc Maynard’s Public House with a champagne toast and a professional photographer to capture you and your sweetie’s (or group of fabulous friends’) special moments. Tickets are 25$ and can be bought through their website.
Valentines Day Trivia at Clever Bottle
Located in Belltown, this swanky little bar is hosting a Valentines Day trivia that will put a little love in your heart. Celebrity couples, cultural romance differences, and international weddings are expected to be category topics- do a little pre-trivia research and maybe you’ll be crowned the winner! Trivia starts at 730, come early to take advantage of their happy hour from 5-7.
